Peruvian Festivities Calendar

Easter Monday

Procession of El Señor de los Temblores (Lord of the Earthquakes), starting at 4:00 PM outside the Cathedral. A large crucifix is paraded through the streets, returning to the Plaza de Armas around 8:00 PM to bless the tens of thousands of people who have assembled.

Q'Olloriti

A moveable festivity on Jun also called the Snow Star Festival, is held at a 4,700 m.a.s.l. glacier north of Ocongate (Ausangate) 150 km southeast of Cusco.

Corpus Christi

A moveable festivity on Jun, the Thu after Trinity Sunday, all the statues of the Virgin and of saints from Cusco's churches are paraded through the streets to the Cathedral. The Plaza de Armas is surrounded by tables with women selling cuy (guinea pig) and a mixed grill called chiriuchu (cuy, chicken, tortillas, fish eggs, water-weeds, maize, cheese and sausge).

Inti Raymi

On Jun, 24; the pageant of Inti Raymi, the Inka festival of the winter solstice, is enacted in Quechua at 10:00 AM at the Qoricancha, moving on to Sacsayhuaman at 1:00 PM. On the night before Inti Raymi, the Plaza de Armas is crowded with processions and food stalls.

Day of the Virgin

On September, 8; It's a colourful procession of masked dancers from th church of Almudena, at the southwest edge of Cusco, near Belen, to the plaza San Francisco. There is also a splendid fair at Almudena, and a bull fight on the following day.
