Lares Valley

To the north of Urubamba and Calca beyond the great peaks that tower above the Sacred Valley, lies the valley of Lares an area famed for its traditional Quechua communities and strong weaving traditions. The mountainous territory that lies between these two valleys offers a great deal to the ambitious trekker, as do the valleys themselves, and although the area is slowly being “discovered” by some Cusco Guides, you are still likely to have it largely to yourself. The entire Cordillera Urubamba is threaded with tracks and the remains of ancient Inka trails and as you might expect, the variety of trekking routs is almost endless. Many of the locals may offer to sell weavings or mantas long the route, at price a fraction of those in Cusco.
Lares is also a perfect example of Perú´s fabulous biking opportunities and it has some things for everyone, suiting all levels of daring and technical ability. You can freewheel from chilly Passes, past llamas and traditional Quechua communities, on unpaved but drivable road or fallow old Inka trails.
